Extinction Rebellion's Third Demand, Decide Together, calls for a Citizens Assembly on climate and ecological justice. Despite a deep commitment to the issues, and numerous initiatives, the movement has struggled to embed justice into its approach in a meaningful way. As the widest circle, the purpose of which is to deliver the Three Demands, XRUK Rebel Hive is inviting applications from researchers who want to develop the knowledge and insight that are needed to turn words into deeds.
The work has started, with a three month project that sets out to map the problem space, learning what has been tried so far, what worked, and what we need to do better. This is not a job for one person, and neither will it be done in just a few short months. If you want to help shape the decision-making in this important area of Extinction Rebellion's work this call-out is for you.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Institutional knowledge of XRUK - this matters and could have been acquired anywhere in the organism, from local group to central circle but, if you do not have that experience others may depending on capacity help you learn what you need to know.
- Lived experience of marginalisation - this also matters because otherwise how will you know, but remember, oppression takes many forms and it is intersectional. Diversity and represention is relevant and prospective candidates are asked to self-reflect in this matter.
- Understanding of climate justice issues - you don't want to have to start everything from scratch but maybe you have some adjacent knowledge bases that are relevant to this work and you are a fast learner, in which case, bring us your stuff.
- Research and analytical skills - it is a research project, you are going to need them.
