The Commmuity Assemblies team is a growing and well-functioning happy team of people who are passionate about promoting assemblies to show how things can be done differently in politics!

Within Extinction Rebellion’s Self-organising System, Community Assemblies is currently a campaign group however we are in the process of changing to a UK working group and the proposal is to become a sub group of Local Grassroots Support [LGS] which sits in Operations.

Community Assemblies Scope:

  • To support Extinction Rebellion Local Groups with planning, organising, publicising, setting up and running Community Assemblies alongside their local allies.
  • To help Local Groups and alliances record and share Assembly recommendations for their councils, MPs, or others with relevant responsibilities.
  • To advise and support local Assemblies until positive engagement is achieved.
  • To help everyone involved in Extinction Rebellion to understand that Community Assemblies are a deliberative democracy pathway to our Third Demand - a Citizens’ Assembly on Climate and Ecological Justice.

There are three different types of assemblies - to understand the difference between Citizens’, Community and People’s assemblies, please read this explainer on the Rebel Toolkit
